The Harbor Academy
Many of the children who come to the Harbor have not attended school regularly. They are likely to be making failing grades and are at risk for dropping out of school. While the reasons may vary for why a child is not doing well in school, many of the children need significant intervention and consistent support if they are to have any chance at overcoming their education deficits. To address this problem the Harbor has entered into a partnership with Trinity Charter School (TCS), an established charter school, to operate The Harbor Academy under their charter as a satellite program on our campus. The Harbor continues its focus on being a provider of residential services, while at the same time having a charter school bring their expertise to our children who need additional education support. The Harbor Academy will be an “open enrollment” program initially serving 22 children from Boys & Girls Harbor and 8 at-risk children from the community in grades one through eight. The school is scheduled to be open for the 2008-2009 school year.
Under
the terms of the partnership, Trinity Charter School will provide the
school principal, teachers, and staff training. They will also be
responsible for diagnostic testing, curriculum and instruction, reading
materials, textbooks, and general supplies. Payment for these services
will come from the state’s charter school funding program. Boys &
Girls Harbor will provide the education facilities (classroom space,
lunch area, gymnasium, and outdoor athletic field) on our campus. The
Harbor will support the teaching staff with additional education supplies and
equipment, field trip and enrichment activities, and transportation for
children in the community who will be attending the school.
